The 3,000 m2 landfill in Quynh Khe 2 village, Kim Xuyen commune has been closed and planted with trees for many years now.

Previously, Kim Xuyen commune had 4 landfills for domestic waste in 4 different villages, but now all 4 landfills have been closed, of which 1 landfill has been covered with green. Mr. Vu Viet Bao, Vice Chairman of Kim Xuyen Commune People's Committee, said that in 2016, the locality closed the landfill of about 3,000 m2 in Quynh Khe 2 village in the form of socialization. A family in the commune filled the land, planted trees and ornamental plants at this landfill. The locality invested funds to level the remaining 3 landfills and build them into waste transfer points. "Previously, at voter meetings, people often complained about the landfills causing environmental pollution. Many people were upset because the landfill was right next to the road, often congested, and gave off an unpleasant odor. However, in recent years, this situation has no longer existed. People are very excited," said Mr. Bao.

Binh Dan is a small commune in the district with more than 1,300 households. The whole commune has only one centralized landfill of about 4,200 m2. In May 2021, Binh Dan commune was permitted by the province to collect and transport waste to a factory in Viet Hong commune (Thanh Ha) for treatment. As soon as the province permitted the transportation of waste to the treatment plant, the local government closed the landfill to protect the environment at the end of 2021 with a budget of about 200 million VND from socialized sources. Mr. Hoang Le Phong, Chairman of Binh Dan Commune People's Committee, shared that for the past 2 years, the local government has planted acacia and eucalyptus trees on the old landfill area, and at the same time built a waste transfer point next to it. The closure of the commune's only centralized landfill has helped reduce environmental pollution, creating a green and clean landscape for the surrounding area.

Dong Cam commune has 3 inactive landfills in 3 villages: Phi Gia, Dong Kenh and Dong Xa Nam. In 2019, the local government leveled and closed 2 landfills in Phi Gia and Dong Xa Nam villages. Mr. Dong Minh Hien, Chairman of Dong Cam commune People's Committee shared that before the landfills were still in operation, the locality often received feedback from people about environmental pollution in the landfill area, especially from people in other villages in the commune bordering the landfill area. Since the 2 landfills in the commune were leveled and closed, the locality has no longer received feedback or frustration about pollution at the landfills. It is expected that by the end of this year, the commune People's Committee will plant trees at these 2 landfills and close the landfill in Dong Kenh village.

Most of the landfills in Kim Thanh district have stopped operating and closed, and the locality has built waste transfer points here.

Through research in many localities in Kim Thanh district, in addition to leveling, filling the land to close landfills and planting trees, in localities that have not closed landfills, every year, the People's Committees at the commune level invest in purchasing biological products to treat waste. To facilitate the collection and transportation of waste to the treatment plant, localities have selected convenient waste collection and transfer points. Many transfer points have invested in building surrounding embankments to limit the situation of waste spilling outside. The waste collection and transfer points selected by localities are far from residential areas.

According to the People's Committee of Kim Thanh district, the total volume of domestic waste generated in the district is about 42,864 tons/year. Waste generated is classified at source about 3,400 tons/year. From 2019 to 2021, 14 communes and towns in the district transported waste to the waste treatment plant in Viet Hong commune (Thanh Ha) for treatment. By April 2023, the remaining 4 communes of the district, Dong Cam, Lien Hoa, Dai Duc, Tam Ky, were also permitted by the province to transport waste to the plant for treatment. The district currently has 38 landfills, of which 9 landfills in 9 communes and towns are supported with funding to build landfills according to technical standards, the rest are not invested in construction according to technical standards, do not have waterproofing layers, ventilation pipes... Up to now, most of the landfills in the district have been closed, many of which have been planted with trees.

According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Hai Duong province has 193 landfills that have stopped operating, of which Kim Thanh district has 30 landfills, ranking second after Nam Sach district.

Ms. Le Thi Thuy Van, Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Kim Thanh district, said that in the coming time, Kim Thanh district will continue to guide the remaining communes to develop plans to close landfills and plant trees to protect the environment.
