India plans to host G20 leaders' video conference

According to a reporter in New Delhi citing informed sources on November 7, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair an online conference of leaders of the Group of 20 leading developed and emerging economies (G20) on November 22.

The upcoming virtual summit is expected to focus on the development agenda, including initiatives in digital public infrastructure, climate finance and clean energy, as well as challenges facing the Global South or developing countries, according to the sources. The conference will also discuss the conflict in Ukraine, the conflict between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas.

Earlier, at the end of the G20 Summit in New Delhi last September, Prime Minister Modi proposed to hold a virtual meeting of the group's leaders before India's presidency ends. India has sent invitations to the leaders of G20 members to attend this virtual meeting.

Also at the conference in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi handed over the G20 presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Brazil will assume the G20 presidency for a period of one year, starting December 1, 2023.

In a related development, on November 7, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hosted envoys from G20 members at the India International Conference Centre (IICC) Yashobhoomi in Dwarka, Delhi. During the discussions, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar expressed his gratitude to the G20 members for supporting India in assuming the role of Chair of the group.
