Scientists were awarded the "Rising Star" badge - the world's outstanding rising scientific stars, announced by the website Research.com on December 2.

Research.com, a prestigious electronic information portal for scientists around the world, has just announced the results of the ranking of scientists with outstanding achievements in scientific publications in 2023. This is the second year the "Best Rising Stars of Science in the World" ranking has been announced.

The ranking includes a list of the top 1,000 scientists from all major research fields, with statistics only considering those whose first publication was in the last 12 years.

Among the 7 scientists working in Vietnam, 5 are Vietnamese and 2 are foreigners, including: Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach (Hanoi Medical University, ranked 2nd in the world); Dr. Tran Nguyen Hai (Duy Tan University, ranked 603), Dr. Thai Hoang Chien (Ton Duc Thang University, ranked 621), Dr. Phung Van Phuc (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, ranked 762) and Dr. Hoang Nhat Duc (Duy Tan University, ranked 968).

According to the list, Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach, Hanoi Medical University, is the only Vietnamese scientist in the top 10 scientists (ranked 2nd, up one place compared to 2022), in the field of community medicine.

In 2016, Tran Xuan Bach became the youngest associate professor in Vietnam at the age of 32. In 2015, he was awarded the International Clinical and Prevention Research Award by the AIDS Research Center, Johns Hopkins University (USA). He received the Noam Chomsky Award - 2020 Research Achievement Award.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Xuan Bach meets the standards for recognition as a professor in medicine and is one of the three youngest people to be recognized as a professor this year. He is also a scientist in the top 1% of Clarivate's most cited scientists in 2023.

China is the country with the most scientists (353), followed by the US (171), and other countries such as Iran (51), the UK (40), Australia (48), Germany (27), Singapore (26), and South Korea (15). The leader of the ranking is Mohsen Sheikholeslami (Iran).

The top 10 leading scientists come from the following countries: China (5), USA, Vietnam, Italy, Iran, Pakistan (1).

The criteria for a scientist to be evaluated in the global rankings are based on the General H-index (an evaluation index based on scientific articles and citation values across all disciplines), the contribution rate in a certain field, in addition to their awards and achievements.

For this ranking, Research.com looked at data from 166,880 scientists, with the world's top publication and citation productivity, using data from Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Graph. Only the top 1,000 scientists with the highest H-index were included in the ranking.

Research.com says that rankings are not an absolute measure of a scientist’s contributions. They cross-check and validate each scientist against a number of other criteria, such as the number of publications in major journals and conference proceedings, to see their impact in certain fields.

Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG) was a free service that worked similarly to paid platforms such as Scopus, Dimensions, and Web of Science, but was discontinued at the end of 2021. Research.com believes that MAG remains one of the most prominent and robust databases available to the scientific community for conducting research and building scientific tools.
