Two Vietnamese professors elected as members of the World Academy of Sciences

Among the 74 newly elected academicians this time, Vietnam has 2 scientists: Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science Nguyen The Hoang and Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai.

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) recently elected 74 new academicians, the most in the history of TWAS.

The two Vietnamese scientists elected as TWAS academicians this time are Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang, Deputy Director of 108 Central Military Hospital, and Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice Principal of the University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City National University.

TWAS's decision takes effect from January 1, 2025, bringing the total number of members of this organization to 1,444.

Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang was born in 1965, hometown in Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh.

He was awarded the title of associate professor in Vietnam in 2006, received a doctorate in science in 2008 and associate professor from the University of Munich in 2009. In 2018, he was awarded the title of professor.

He is the main author of more than 100 research works published in domestic and international journals, chairing and participating in many scientific research projects at the state and ministerial levels.

His scientific research focuses mainly on the fields of neovascularization and cell culture, free tissue flap transfer for microsurgery, treatment of complex congenital limb defects and organ transplantation.

In addition to many prestigious national and international scientific awards such as: Vifotec, Nepomuc von Nussbaum, Karl-Max von Bauerfeind, APKO..., First and Third Class Labor Medals, in 2012, he received the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel scientific award of the German Academy of Sciences Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for exceptionally outstanding research works with scientific breakthroughs.

Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was born in 1974, from Quang Ngai, graduated in chemistry from the University of General Sciences (now the University of Natural Sciences).

She then received her PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry from Toyama University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Japan.

She was appointed associate professor in 2014 and then professor in 2021. In 2023, Professor Mai was awarded the title of Meritorious Teacher.

Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has published the work "Xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of Vietnamese medicinal plants," studying 288 extracts from 96 plants to treat gout, pioneering the combination of traditional Vietnamese medicine with modern science.

Research has discovered many new compounds, raw materials for the production of highly effective drugs to treat gout, diabetes, Alzheimer's, arthritis, stomach ulcers and cancer.

Professor, PhD Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has led 14 research projects, published 90 international articles and 80 national articles.

Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has commercialized many health supplements and received the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award presented by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in 2019 and the Kovalevskaia Award in 2021, among many other awards.

TWAS is an international non-governmental organization under UNESCO, bringing together more than 1,400 outstanding scientists from more than 100 countries and representing about 130 scientific academies worldwide, including the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
