The case of a girl who died in an apartment in Hanoi, her boyfriend sentenced to death

On July 25, the Hanoi People's Court sentenced defendant Nguyen Ha Phuc (born in 1987, in Dong Da district, Hanoi) to 10 years in prison for "Intentionally causing injury" and death for "Illegal drug trafficking". Combined, the defendant must serve the death penalty.

Previously, at 11:15 p.m. on August 12, 2022, Hoang Mai District Police received a report from the public about a death at an apartment in the Rose Town apartment building.

When the police arrived at the scene, they determined that the victim, Nguyen Thi Ngoc B. (born in 1997), was dead and lying on the floor of the bedroom outside. Phuc was present at the scene with a panicked expression.

The results of the on-site investigation at the apartment found many reddish-brown stains in different locations in the apartment. In addition, the working group discovered in the living room next to the shoe cabinet a suitcase containing 8 plastic bags containing white and orange crystals.

Investigation results determined that at the end of 2021, Phuc had a relationship with Ms. B. Around February 2022, through social friends introducing groups for illegal drug trading on Facebook, Phuc had the idea of ​​buying and selling drugs.

On March 25, 2022, Phuc and B. rented a house together. Through Facebook and Telegram, Phuc contacted an account named "Mai Anh" to buy 2 kg of ketamine and 500 packages of "fun water" drugs for 1.5 billion VND.

Phuc took a taxi to Thanh Tri bridge to meet Mai Anh to give him money, then returned to the apartment and together with B. divided the 2 kg of ketamine into many small bags to both sell and use. Phuc used the "happy water" packages and sold them to customers.

On June 15, 2022, after selling almost all of the above drugs, Phuc continued to order 4,000 ecstasy pills and 1 kg of ketamine "Kim Tuyen" as smooth as sand for 980 million VND. The two also divided these drugs into small amounts to sell to customers.

More than a month later, Phuc and his girlfriend moved to the Rose Town apartment. Here, Phuc continued to contact via Telegram to order 4 kg of ketamine and 500 packages of "happy water" for 1 billion VND from a man. Phuc hid these drugs in the apartment.

At about 6:00 p.m. on August 12, 2022, Phuc and his girlfriend had a conflict because the defendant suspected that Ms. B. had a relationship with someone else.

In the elevator going up to the apartment, the two continued to argue. Inside the house, while Ms. B. was changing clothes, Phuc used his left hand to wrap around her neck, pinning her neck, his right hand around her thigh, and picked her up. Ms. B. tried to struggle, using her right hand to hit Phuc's back. Phuc carried his girlfriend to the living room but fell to the floor.

Phuc hugged, held, and used his hands to forcefully pull Ms. B's two hands to the balcony door of the living room, daring them both to jump down to commit suicide. At that time, Ms. B struggled, holding the balcony door to prevent Phuc from opening it.

Phuc continued to hold, nudge, use his hands to hold and forcefully pull Ms. B. closer to the coffee table in the living room. When Ms. B. was able to break free, the defendant asked his girlfriend to provide the phone password to open it and check, but Ms. B. did not agree.

The two then continued to fight, Phuc strangled and pressed his knee hard on his girlfriend’s abdomen… Then Ms. B. sat on the sofa, while Phuc went into the bedroom. 20 minutes later, the defendant heard a “thud”. When he went into the bathroom to check, Phuc found his girlfriend dead.

The cause of Ms. B's death was determined by authorities to be acute pulmonary edema in a drug user; closed abdominal trauma.

Meanwhile, the amount of colored crystals seized at the apartment, according to the appraisal, were drugs of various types, totaling nearly 7.7 kg.
