President Yoon Suk Yeol has been banned from leaving the country pending an investigation into charges of treason and other crimes related to the imposition of martial law last week.
Yonhap reported on December 9 that the ban was issued by the Ministry of Justice shortly after the Corruption Investigation Office of Senior Officials (CIO) announced that it had submitted a request for the order.
Earlier, a spokesman for the South Korean Ministry of National Defense said President Yoon Suk Yeol remains Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.
The ministry confirmed that control of the country's military is now in the hands of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Earlier, Yoon Suk Yeol said he had entrusted his fate to the ruling People's Power Party (PPP) after a failed attempt to impose martial law last week prompted calls for his resignation.
Meanwhile, the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) has proposed a special counsel bill to investigate whether President Yoon Suk Yeol committed treason and other violations related to his brief declaration of martial law last week.
Kim Yong Min, vice chairman of the DP, and lawmaker Kim Seung Won submitted a bill calling for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Mr. Yoon's "rebellion."
The DP also proposed a bill to appoint a special counsel to investigate allegations involving first lady Kim Keon Hee, including her alleged involvement in a stock manipulation scheme and interference in election nominations through a power broker.
Meanwhile, DP leader Lee Jae Myung warned that the political fallout from President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed attempt to impose martial law was causing turmoil in financial markets and threatening to cause irreparable damage to the economy.
