The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism directed the Department of Physical Training and Sports to conduct a general inspection and review of training work at the teams; clarify the nature of the incident at the national youth table tennis team; if there are any violations, they will be strictly handled.
On the afternoon of October 9, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held a regular press conference for the third quarter of 2023. The press conference was chaired by Deputy Minister Trinh Thi Thuy; Chief of Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet.
In response to the information that the national youth table tennis team athletes (currently living at the My Dinh National Sports Complex) are said to not be guaranteed adequate nutrition (which has been published in the press in recent days), Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Trinh Thi Thuy said that the center pays monthly salaries and nutrition to coaches and athletes through a separate account.
For the national youth table tennis team, food and accommodation from February 2023 will be arranged at the My Dinh National Sports Complex and the Hanoi National Sports Training Center will pay for the coaches' expenses according to regulations.
According to Deputy Minister Trinh Thi Thuy, this incident should be considered a big lesson for the sports industry, especially the coordination between the parties.
This is also a warning to those who participate in training and educating young athletes but have not set goals or paid proper attention to their training and living conditions, but instead show signs of caring for personal interests.
Regarding the handling, immediately after receiving the feedback, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism directed the Department of Physical Education and Sports to coordinate with relevant units to handle the matter. The Department has stopped convening the coaching board, replaced other coaches, and brought the team to practice and live at the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi.
"The Ministry has given strong direction and assigned relevant agencies and units to quickly verify and clarify responsibilities. On that basis, information will be collected on shortcomings and violations, if any, to strictly handle and promptly rectify and improve the quality of training work," said Deputy Minister Trinh Thi Thuy.
Ms. Trinh Thi Thuy also said that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will direct the Department of Physical Training and Sports to conduct a general inspection and review of training work at the teams, especially in ensuring facilities, living conditions, and funding according to regulations to meet training requirements, strictly implementing legal regulations on the implementation of professional tasks associated with caring for the lives of coaches and athletes.
Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Nguyen Hong Minh said: "The Hanoi National Sports Training Center is responsible for managing professional training, providing accommodation and meals according to the state's regime and policies for athletes. In addition, the Department of Physical Education and Sports and related units within the department are responsible for comprehensive direction and management. Based on the verification and clarification of the nature of the incident and any violations, if any, in the national youth table tennis team, the department will report and take strict measures in accordance with the law."
Regarding the information that some young table tennis players had to pay money to the head coach, Deputy Director Nguyen Hong Minh said that according to the head coach's report, the team had 10 athletes, of which 7 athletes had accounts managed by their parents, and 3 athletes were orphans so the money was transferred directly to the athletes' personal accounts.
During his time at the team, the athlete made purchases on social media and was scammed, so he transferred money to the coach's account and asked him to keep it for him. After discovering this, the Department of Sports and Physical Training asked the head coach to return all the money to the athlete and handle the next steps immediately.
