The helicopter encountered a technical problem and crashed and caught fire while trying to land at Porbandar airport, India.

An Indian Coast Guard helicopter crashed in the western state of Gujarat, killing all three crew members, police said on January 5.

The accident happened to the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) named Dhruv while performing a routine training flight at Porbandar airport, about 416 km west of Gandhinagar city - the capital of Gujarat state.

The incident occurred at around 12:10 pm on January 5 local time when the helicopter tried to land at Porbandar airport.

According to officials, the helicopter experienced technical problems and crashed and caught fire shortly after.

Images from local TV channels showed thick black smoke billowing from the helicopter at the scene of the incident.

Three crew members, including two pilots, were taken to hospital but died from severe burns.

Police are working with the Coast Guard to investigate the cause of the accident.
