Sudan has about 255 pyramids that were built and still standing, nearly double the 138 pyramids of Egypt.

Thanks to the development of agriculture, the Sudanese civilization in Africa achieved prosperity and lasted for a long time. Throughout its development, the Sudanese people always remembered the gods and kings by building temples and tombs to preserve their bodies. As a result, more than 255 pyramids were built and still stand today.

The area was originally an Egyptian colony. However, when the new Egyptian dynasty collapsed in the 18th century, the Kushites rebelled and established their own wealthy dynasty, holding vast territories in Sudan.

The Kingdom of Kush dates back to 8000 BC, with pottery remains found near its capital city of Kerma. Located in the southern Nubia region of northeastern Africa, Kush was a “complex, highly stratified urban society based on extensive agriculture.” The Kushite kings built pyramids, building them across Sudan.

However, it took much longer for Western tourists to see these ancient masterpieces, as tourism was hampered by two civil wars and the war for independence that led to the creation of South Sudan in 2011.

Meroe was the capital of the Kushite kingdom until its collapse in 400 AD and is home to Sudan’s best-preserved pyramids. More than 200 of them are spread across the sand. Their granite and sandstone bases are carved with images of elephants, giraffes and antelopes, evidence that this was once fertile grassland.

Unlike the Egyptian pyramids at Giza, the Meroe pyramid is smaller with an average height of 6-30 m, much lower than the great pyramid in Egypt, which has an average height of up to 138 m.

The structure of the Meroe pyramid is also unique. Instead of being built independently, pyramids in Sudan were often built adjacent to the temple right next to it.

In 2011, the Meroe pyramid complex was recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage. However, even now, tourism to Sudan is still discouraged due to the ongoing unrest related to the 2021 coup. Very few tourists visit here and usually stay no longer than 10 days.
