There have been a series of cases of children being poisoned by eating strange candy bought at school gates, leaving many parents worried and not knowing how to handle the situation.

Ms. Luong Thi Trang (38 years old, living in Hoang Mai, Hanoi), whose child is in 6th grade, was extremely worried when she heard the news that students in many provinces and cities were poisoned by eating candy bought in front of the school gate.

Even though she constantly reminds her child not to eat any kind of candy while at school, she is still worried that her child will eat strange candy that contains toxic substances, even addictive substances.

Many children were poisoned after eating strange candy bought in front of the school gate.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Director of the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital, shared that this concern of parents is completely natural, because if children eat strange candy and get poisoned, it will greatly affect their health.

Children with food poisoning may experience symptoms of headache, stomachache, nausea, even fever due to infection. In some cases, they may have diarrhea, causing dehydration and fatigue.

Doctor Nguyen recommends that to limit the risk of children coming into contact with strange candies that could affect their health, parents should absolutely not give their children money to buy snacks at school.

Limit snacking for children, remind children to eat foods with clear origins, do not eat or drink strange foods outside the school area. Because these products pose a potential risk of food safety and hygiene, causing poisoning.

In case children eat strange candies and show signs of excitement, irritation, headache or nausea, teachers and parents should immediately take the children to medical facilities.

When children bring strange candy products home, parents need to observe and should not let them eat it. If children have eaten strange candy, parents should closely monitor their child's behavior.

"Usually, if there is a problem with the food, the child will have reactions and symptoms after 15-30 minutes of eating. If the child shows symptoms such as stomach ache, nausea, diarrhea, or signs of irritation, fatigue, or difficulty breathing, the child should be taken to the nearest medical facility for treatment by doctors," said Dr. Nguyen.

Doctors also warn that there are many types of strange candy, not only at risk of poisoning but more dangerously can also contain addictive substances, which is extremely dangerous for young children.

According to Mr. Nguyen, the center has previously received many patients poisoned by using drugs in the form of food such as cakes, candies, soft drinks...

Using food containing drugs can lead to immediate poisoning such as nervous confusion, coma, convulsions, mental disorders; arrhythmia, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, respiratory failure... even leading to death.

According to the doctor, marijuana poisoning through inhalation or ingestion can lead to reduced coordination, reduced judgment, central nervous system depression, and impaired consciousness. In particular, children can fall into a coma for up to 36 hours if they consume cakes, candies, and soft drinks containing this substance.

“Synthetic drugs are expensive, but candy containing drugs is often made from low-quality, low-cost ingredients. The goal of bad guys is to lure students into using cheap cakes, candies, and soft drinks, then move on to more expensive products,” Dr. Nguyen warned.

Recently, 11 students of Nguyen Quy Duc Secondary School, Hanoi (including 10 6th graders and 1 7th grader) bought candy (of unknown origin, green wrapper, foreign writing) on their way to school and shared it. About 45 minutes later, the students felt tired, had headaches, and felt nauseous.

The school coordinated with the ward health station to take the students to the health station for examination and monitoring. Currently, the students' health is stable and they are going to school as usual.

Faced with this situation, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has sent a document requesting the Departments of Education and Training and schools in the city to strengthen school safety assurance.

The Department recommends that units step up propaganda to parents and students to absolutely not buy candies and snacks of unknown origin. In addition, parents and students need to pay attention to their children's study and living schedules at school to coordinate with the school to ensure security and safety.
