Japan records temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for the first time this summer

Japan's Meteorological Agency said on August 5 that the country recorded temperatures rising to 40 degrees Celsius for the first time this summer, amid intense heat in the northeastern region.

Specifically, among 914 observation stations nationwide, the temperature at about 300 stations was at 35 degrees Celsius, of which the temperature in Fukushima province at around 2 p.m. on August 5 was measured at 40 degrees Celsius.

Tokyo recorded its 16th day of scorching heat this year, with temperatures equaling last year's record of 35.9 degrees Celsius.

Nationwide, temperatures in July in Japan were 1.91 degrees Celsius above average - the highest since records began in 1898.
