During the endoscopy, doctors discovered a large mass of food residue in the stomach, causing inflammation and hemorrhage of the mucosa.

Persimmons contain many substances that can coagulate and be harmful if eaten on an empty stomach.

According to information from Nghe An Northwest Regional General Hospital, this medical facility has just received patient NTHD (57 years old, residing in Nghe An) in a state of epigastric pain, feeling of fullness and burning in the abdomen.

Through investigation, the patient had previously bought a kilogram of crispy persimmons to eat at home. At the hospital, the patient was ordered to undergo a gastroscopy. At this time, the doctors were surprised to discover a large mass of food residue, measuring 3x5 cm, in the patient's stomach.

This mass of food residue forms a hard, ivory-white mass, causing inflammation and hemorrhage of the gastric mucosa.

According to Dr. Vuong Kha Vinh, Deputy Head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, the endoscopy team removed the food mass through flexible endoscopy by cutting it into small pieces, then removing it through the mouth.

After more than an hour, the entire mass of food residue was removed. The patient recovered and was able to eat normally again the next day.

Dr. Vinh said that in some cases, when eating on an empty stomach, the concentration of HCL (Hydrochloric Acid) is high. Meanwhile, fruits also have a lot of fiber, the resin is easily precipitated, causing the plant fibers to stick together, forming a solid mass of pulp.

"The habit of eating too fast and not chewing thoroughly is also one of the causes leading to the risk of intestinal obstruction due to food residue," Dr. Vinh added.

On the other hand, the expert informed that persimmons themselves contain a lot of tannin and pectin, especially soaked persimmons. If eaten while hungry, these substances will coagulate under the effect of stomach acid.

These aggregates cannot pass through the pylorus into the small intestine and remain in the stomach, forming a food-like foreign body mass as in the case of patient D.
