After a whole year of waiting, the "seasonal" flood water of early September finally arrived in the eagerness and excitement of the people of Tu Lac, Minh Tan ward (Kinh Mon).
At this time, more than 60 hectares of rươi exploitation in Ngoc Island and the area outside the dike in Tu Lac area have begun to harvest rươi. On average, each household harvests about 20kg/pond. Being exploited completely naturally, the rươi here has superior quality, is uniform, and has high nutritional content. The rươi is consumed as soon as it is harvested, with a selling price of about 350-400 thousand VND/kg, equivalent to last year.
Mr. Tran Van The’s family and other households harvesting earthworms in Tu Lac area are always on duty at the lagoon, waiting for the harvest. When it gets dark, electric lights are turned on at the locations where the tidal water is brought into the lagoon. Family members prepare items such as buckets, basins, styrofoam boxes, etc., ready to harvest earthworms.
Mr. The said: “My family has 1 hectare of rươi. To exploit rươi effectively, the family has invested in an irrigation system, built dykes, fenced areas, built water control sluices, and proactively ensured that tidal water flows naturally into and out of the lagoon. We work while learning and gaining experience. Regularly observe the tidal cycle; grasp the development process of rươi, from the time the rươi larvae follow the water to "settle" in the fields to create a favorable environment for them to live, reproduce, and develop.”
According to the experience of households in Tu Lac, earthworms usually appear twice a year, in which the main harvest season with high yield lasts from the 9th lunar month until after Tet. To have a successful earthworm season, along with favorable natural conditions, the application of technical advances in production, investment in soil improvement to create a good environment for earthworms to grow and develop are important factors that people follow the correct process. No one tells anyone, but the whole area knows not to use chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides... in the alluvial land. Any field that is well improved and has fertile soil will yield a lot of earthworms.
After harvesting the season's worms, people will plow the land, add manure, and plant a crop of organic rice. Around April, after harvesting, the straw will be left on the field, buried with a plow, and sprinkled with compost and rice husks to create nutrients for the soil. More important is the experience of regulating water and knowing when the worms will emerge. Over the years, thanks to the benefits of the worms, many families here have been able to raise their children to adulthood and build new, spacious houses.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, Vice Chairman of Minh Tan Ward People's Committee said: "In order to effectively and sustainably exploit earthworms in the Pearl Island area, in recent years, local authorities and specialized sectors have paid attention to investing funds to build roads in the earthworm exploitation area, training, transferring science and technology, experience, promoting brands, and consuming products".
“September 20th, October 5th”, people in Tu Lac area are excited to harvest “heavenly blessings”. Coming to Tu Lac area in the season of rươi, the atmosphere is bustling, bustling, the sound of laughter echoes along the dikes and roads leading to the exploitation area. Another interesting thing is that here, the fruit gardens around the rươi ponds are green all year round. Trees and livestock are cared for using organic methods, without using chemical fertilizers or pesticides, so the fruits and livestock harvested have a delicious and characteristic flavor.
