According to current law, all foreign citizens and stateless men who have acquired Russian citizenship and are of military age are obliged to register for military service at their place of residence.
On July 31, in its third (final) reading, the State Duma (lower house) of Russia passed a law on mandatory conditions for obtaining Russian citizenship, which is military service registration. The law comes into force from the date of its official publication.
According to current law, all foreign citizens and stateless men who have acquired Russian citizenship and are of military age are obliged to register for military service at their place of residence (place of stay). However, the draft law outlines that many cases of naturalized citizens evading their service have been discovered.
The new law by a group of deputies from all blocs in the Duma and headed by Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin synchronizes the process of registration for military service and obtaining Russian citizenship.
According to the current law, the grounds for termination of Russian citizenship also include intentionally communicating false information about the obligation to comply with the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the laws of the country, which is manifested in the imposition of a crime or actions that threaten the national security of the Russian Federation.
