Russia's special envoy to Belarus, Boris Gryzlov, warned that Moscow would regard any attack on Belarus as an invasion of itself and would use all its military capabilities in response.

Speaking to Belarusian television station STV, Mr. Gryzlov, who used to serve as Russia's interior minister, cautioned third parties against recklessly attacking Russia's main ally.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin made it clear that in the event of an attack on Belarus, we will consider this an attack on Russia. In such a case, the military doctrine of the Russian Federation allows a response with all our weapons," Gryzlov said.

Russia and Belarus have increasingly stepped up military cooperation amid the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev. Earlier this year, Russia announced the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus at Minsk's request.

Belarus has also recently been dealing with strained relations with another important NATO member in Eastern Europe, Poland. Relations between the two neighboring countries have been deteriorating since the 2020 presidential election in Belarus. Poland, like the EU in general, openly supported the opposition in its unsuccessful attempt to overthrow President Aleksandr Lukashenko.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has also strained relations between Minsk and Warsaw. Poland has reacted angrily to Russia’s deployment of tactical nuclear weapons and has repeatedly warned against the activities of the Wagner Group, a private military company that it says is being redeployed to Belarus after a failed coup in June.

Poland claims that Wagner is increasingly operating near its borders. Belarus has denied the allegations, saying Warsaw is “aggravating” the situation.
