At least two people in Shenzhen, China, have died from heatstroke and many others have suffered health problems as temperatures hovered around 40 degrees Celsius for the eighth consecutive day on the country's east coast.

Emergency services in Shenzhen, a city of 18 million people in Guangdong province, said they received 88 home emergency calls for heat-related health problems between Aug. 1 and 6. Two men, one in his 50s and the other in his 60s, died, according to information released late Aug. 7.

After experiencing its hottest July in modern history, China has been hit by a severe heatwave, especially in the east and south of the country. Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, recorded a record high of 41.9 degrees Celsius on August 3.

It is forecast that in the next three days, most areas south of the Yangtze River, where it flows into the sea in Shanghai, will record temperatures of 37-39 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in some areas of Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces may exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
