The “treasure hunt” trend is said to have originated from a clip recording Ms. Lan answering questions from the People's Court in the case at Saigon Commercial Joint Stock Bank and Van Thinh Phat Group that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court has just brought to trial (from March 5 to April 11, 2024).
In the clip, there is a conversation between the panel of judges and Ms. Truong My Lan: When the panel of judges asked Ms. Lan where she hid the 673 trillion VND, Ms. Lan replied - the money is at sea. Many people have "followed the trend of finding treasure" with memes, videos of rowing boats out to sea to find treasure...
Lawyer Giang Hong Thanh (Giang Thanh Law Office), who is defending Ms. Truong My Lan, has just submitted a request to handle the violation of the Law on Cyber Security.
The petition was sent to the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (Ministry of Public Security); to the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information (Ministry of Information and Communications); to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuracy (Department 3) and to the Investigation Police Agency (C03), Ministry of Public Security.
The petition states: “I see that all defendants and other participants in the proceedings have a respectful and cooperative attitude towards the panel of judges, the People's Procuracy and professional units participating in the trial.
However, after the first instance trial, a clip appeared, distorting the conversation between the Chief Judge and Ms. Truong My Lan. That clip has now created a fever, even becoming viral, creating a search trend on social networking platforms..."
To prevent further negative impacts on people and society, lawyer Giang Hong Thanh requested that the authorities verify, investigate and clarify violations, and strictly handle those who commit the acts to deter and prevent similar cases from occurring in the future.
In addition, the lawyer hopes that the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information will request the individuals who posted the clip and the management organizations to remove this clip from their accounts, social networking platforms and websites.
Speaking with VietNamNet reporter, lawyer Giang Hong Thanh affirmed that Ms. Truong My Lan did not say that 673 trillion VND was at sea.
Throughout the trial, all defendants and other participants in the proceedings were respectful and cooperative. Regarding the amount of more than 673 trillion VND, this was a figure calculated by the panel of judges and only given in the verdict, so it is impossible that this amount was mentioned during the questioning.
According to Lawyer Giang Hong Thanh, the above clip was created, combined and possibly even used AI technology to make the image as realistic and vivid as possible.
This clip distorts the proceedings of the trial, distorts the words of the Chief Justice as well as Ms. Truong My Lan, creates bad public opinion, reduces the dignity and respect for the law of the Court. Not only that, the fabricated clip has insulted the reputation, honor and dignity of Ms. Truong My Lan, which are protected by law.
The lawyer cited Point d, Clause 1, Article 8 and Points a, b, Clause 3, Clause 5, Article 16 of the Law on Cyber Security to argue that the clip creator's actions violated the law's prohibitions.
The content of the distorted dialogue, inserted into Ms. Truong My Lan's mouth movements, is as follows:
-Does anyone know where the defendant hid the money?
-No one knows yet.
-So where did the defendant hide? Tell the jury honestly to receive leniency?
-Yes, I'm at sea. Yes, that's right, six hundred and something billion.
