Author Ngoc Le Ninh transformed into nature and the universe, listening to all things urgently calling for help in "Insomnia Poetry".

Insomnia Poetry

Sleepless night by the dead river
Where does the soul of that wave wander?
Listen to the sand and gravel reincarnated into another life
The river is gone! I cried out of my dream.

Sleepless night in the dying forest
The soul of the tree staggers in the fading mist
Hear the haunting sounds of hidden ghosts
The forest is gone! I fell down unconscious.

Hungry night sleeping next to hungry animals
Hungry for green forests, hungry for rivers and streams, dry up
Hunger season living in a ruined land
All creatures on the edge of the twilight abyss

Night stops, fish and all creatures stop sleeping
Their eyes widened as they looked at me:
You are the ones who cause so many disasters.
The sad earth became orphaned

Thirsty night sleep beside the clouds thirsty breath
A thousand stars dying in the ashes
Is the biosphere still there after the explosion?
Painful sky of smoke and dust in the eyes of time.

NGOC LE NINH

Doctor, poet Ngoc Le Ninh currently works at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. His name is known to many people for his many contributions to poetry and music. He has written 3 poetry collections and is preparing to release his 4th.

Ngoc Le Ninh's poems often focus on three themes: world affairs, love, nature and environment. Among his many poems on the topic of the environment, I really like "Insomnia Poetry" because of the issue it raises: the destruction of the environment and the responsibility of each person in preserving and protecting the environment. Especially in the past few days, when the northern provinces had to struggle to cope with the terrible destruction of storm No. 3 (Yagi) and its circulation, this issue has become even more practical. More impressive, because the above issues are recreated with a "strange" tone and poetic style. "Insomnia Poetry" talks about the environmental issue, but Ngoc Le Ninh has a different approach, not preaching, not shouting, not stressing. Here, the poet transforms into nature, the universe, listening to all things urgently calling for help.

All the poet's worries began from a sleepless night and then wrapped up in many thoughts and worries about the environment being destroyed:Sleepless night; Sleepless night; Sleepless night; Sleepless night; Sleepless night,The refrain keeps increasing with the poet's frustrated mood, as he witnesses the reality being destroyed... Everything in Ngoc Le Ninh's poetry has a soul..Sadness before the riverjust died,The personification technique is used quite effectively to express the author’s mood, thoughts and frustration at the scene of environmental destruction. Waves, sand, gravel, trees, all have souls, under the pen of Ngoc Le Ninh, they appear vividly and painfully. The verse: “The river is gone! I cried out of my dream. The pain is pushed to the extreme when having to witness all things dying, dying before the destructive hands of humans.

If the first stanza talks about the destruction of water resources, the second stanza talks about human destruction of forest resources. From “Sleepless night”arrive "Sleepless night”There has been a state change: “Sleepless night beside the dying forest/ The tree's soul staggers in the dying mist/ Haunted by the ghosts of the past/ The forest is no more! I fall down unconscious"The scene of forests - the green lungs that have been and are being destroyed by human hands - is personified, making the grass and trees have souls, as if they were appearing in sorrow because of human irresponsibility.

The poem is sad and helpless when the green color of the forest is being destroyed. The consequences of:“Sleepless Night”, “Sleepless Night”To be"Hungry night sleep".In this third stanza, it is not by chance that the author repeats the word “hungry”:“Hungry nights sleep next to hungry animals/ Hungry green forests, hungry rivers and streams dry up/ Hungry seasons live in a dying land and sky/ All species are on the edge of the sunset abyss”. The poet uses the image of “hungry” animals to talk about environmental destruction: green forests are destroyed, rivers and streams dry up, and disasters will follow… So, even animals and living creatures cannot survive, so how can humans survive?

Then the cruel reality is on the brink of the abyss and must cry for help:"All creatures on the edge of the twilight abyss".The syntax “Sleepless Night” is repeated: “At night, all fish and all creatures can't sleep/ Their eyes are wide open, they look at me and question: You are the ones who caused so many disasters/ The earth is sad and in pain, becoming orphaned.. The poem is like a verdict: humans are the cause of disasters, humans are killing their fellow human beings and living beings. The last verse talks about humans' helplessness in the face of the current state of the environment that has been and is being destroyed:“The night thirsts to sleep beside the clouds, thousands thirst to breathe/ Is the biosphere still there after the explosion/ Thousands of stars are dying in the ashes/ Pain in the sky of smoke and dust in the eyes of time”.

The universe is dense and suffocating. In the author's perception, everything seems to be dying, standing on the brink of an abyss and could be destroyed at any moment, if humans do not have the awareness to protect the environment and protect life.

The poetic images in "Insomnia Poetry" by Ngoc Le Ninh form a surreal but not unfamiliar world. Because the scenes of environmental destruction and its consequences can be seen anywhere. Choosing the idea of "Insomnia Poetry" to express and hide within it a pain before the scene of environmental pollution, the destruction of all species, does the author want to call on everyone to immediately stop deforestation, polluting water sources, polluting land, polluting the air... Otherwise, people will have to suffer unpredictable consequences?

Choose a poemSleepless night”To “deal with” the indignation of individuals and society in the issue of environmental protection, Ngoc Le Ninh conveyed to readers a deeply humane message: Let’s save the environment. All things and the universe are crying out in anguish at the destruction of humans.
