Tet holiday often has many delicious and attractive dishes.

Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung, Deputy Head of the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Central Endocrinology Hospital, warned: "During Tet, the biggest concern for people with diabetes is the risk of losing blood sugar control, including the risk of hyperglycemia, as well as hypoglycemia. For people with diabetes, Tet foods often contain a lot of sugar and fat such as jams, candies, banh chung, bamboo shoot soup with pig's feet... These are the culprits that lead to harmful risks to the health of people with diabetes. Every year, during Tet, the Central Endocrinology Hospital often receives many cases of hyperglycemia that must be hospitalized due to unreasonable diet and lifestyle."

However, during Tet, people with diabetes should not completely abstain from these foods, but should pay attention to building a reasonable diet.

Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung instructs: People with diabetes should eat a stable amount of glucid (starch) in appropriate meals, choose foods with a low glycemic index (below 55%), use foods high in fiber (brown rice, brown bread, black bread, vegetables, tubers...), limit sweet and fatty foods, and should combine them with boiled vegetables, mixed vegetables...

Patients should maintain the number of meals, food portions and feeling of fullness as before Tet to avoid overeating. Limit the use of alcohol, bottled soft drinks; drink enough water; continue to maintain daily physical activity.

Patients should avoid large meals, and can divide them into several small meals if blood sugar is not well controlled. They should eat three main meals and have at least one snack. At the same time, do not skip meals even when sick or feeling tired and do not want to eat...
