Chinese mini rubies with eye-catching red color are attracting Vietnamese customers despite their high price compared to domestic products.

The first time importing about 100 kg of Chinese mini persimmons, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong in Cau Giay, Hanoi, said that all the goods were sold out within the day. This type has about 24-26 fruits per kg, when ripe, the fruit is soft like jelly, has a strong sweet taste and is fragrant. The selling price ranges from 80,000-100,000 VND per kg.

In Ho Chi Minh City, this type of persimmon is also sold in traditional markets and on social networks, with prices ranging from 100,000-120,000 VND per kilogram, 2-3 times higher than Vietnamese egg persimmons.

Despite its high price, mini rose quartz is still popular with many people. According to Ms. Hong Nga, an importer at Lao Cai international border gate, she initially imported 5 tons for a trial, but seeing good consumption, she imported more and more. In addition to Hanoi and Lao Cai, she distributes goods to Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

Persimmons are usually packed in 12kg boxes or baskets, priced at around VND360,000 (equivalent to VND30,000 per kg) at the Lao Cai border gate. Wholesale customers must buy at least 2 baskets of persimmons and pay the shipping fee.

In China, this fruit is often grown in cold climates, especially in Shandong and Shaanxi provinces, and costs about 10-15 yuan (35,000-55,000 VND) per kilogram.

Previously, pearl ruby was mainly consumed in China due to its perishability during transportation. However, thanks to improvements in preservation and packaging, this product has been exported to many countries such as Vietnam, Korea and Japan.

The leader of Thu Duc agricultural wholesale market said that Chinese persimmons imported to the market are usually crispy; pearl jelly persimmons are mainly imported through Lao Cai and sold directly to wholesalers or consumers. "This is a new product, appearing for the first time in Vietnam, so consumers should choose products with traceability stamps and from reputable suppliers to ensure quality," he advised.

The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association also believes that it is necessary to strengthen import quality inspection and closely monitor trails and openings to prevent poor quality goods from entering the market.

In the first nine months of the year, Vietnam spent $700 million importing fruits and vegetables from China, up 39 percent year-on-year, with popular items including grapes, apples, persimmons, onions and garlic.
