Two business owners rented 25 self-driving cars to Nguyen Ba Than, 31, but they were seized and pawned.

On August 21, Than was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City; his accomplice Tran Viet Thang received 10 years in prison for fraud and property appropriation.

In connection with the case, Le Quang Vu, 39 years old, received 11 years in prison for receiving property obtained through criminal acts.

During the investigation, the police recovered a number of cars and returned them to the victims.

Defendants in court

In court, Than stated that he opened a pawn shop in District 10 around July 2017. During the course of his business, he rented cars from customers many times and then rented them out to earn the difference. Due to the business's losses, Than came up with the idea of pawning customers' cars to get money to pay off debts and spend.

The indictment determined that from January to July 2018, Than rented a total of 27 cars worth more than 17 billion VND from companies and individuals and then pawned them. Of these, Than rented a total of 15 cars (worth nearly 10 billion VND) from Mr. Hung (director of a company). He then pawned 4 cars to Vu for more than 1 billion VND. Than mortgaged the rest to many people.

During the process of pawning the customer's car, Than asked Tran Viet Thang to pretend to be the car owner to sign contracts with many individuals and organizations.

After the contract expired but Mr. Hung did not see Than deliver the car, he reported it to the police. Through GPS, Mr. Hung discovered that his two cars managed by Vu were parked on No Trang Long Street, Binh Thanh District, so he reported it to the police. After making a record, the police temporarily handed them over to Vu for management. However, Vu later sold the two cars as evidence and has not been able to recover them.

Similarly, Than rented 10 cars (worth more than 6 billion VND) from another company director; the remaining 2 cars belonged to two individuals.

During the investigation and trial, the defendants admitted their crimes.
