Two 81-year-old women from Texas traveled around the world to 7 continents in 80 days.
Ellie Hamby, a photographer, and Sandy Hazelip, a doctor and lecturer, began their trip on January 11, 2023. They had originally planned to start their trip in 2022, but the plan fell through due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Their first stop was Antarctica. They said the journey to the southernmost continent of the Earth was extremely difficult, even having to try to ensure safety many times.
“But when we set foot on the ground in Antarctica, I forgot all about those difficulties. Antarctica was so beautiful that I couldn't believe my eyes,” said Ms. Hamby.
The pair of best friends then went on to visit 18 other countries and territories on seven continents around the world.
During their 80 days of wandering, they rode camels in Egypt, met elephants in Bali, danced in Nepal and watched the Northern Lights over Finland.
Their journey captured the attention of the online community and became one of the most inspiring stories on social media in 2023.
According to CNN, after her husband passed away in 1999, Hazelip and her grandchildren went to Zambia. There, she met Hamby, who was running a medical project in southern Africa with her husband.
There, they shared a common interest in travel. In 2005, Hamby’s husband passed away. From then on, they became even closer.
Mrs Hazelip said the idea for the trip came a few years ago when they both turned 80.
Mrs. Hamby and Mrs. Hazelip dedicated this trip to their late husbands, Kelly and Don.
The story of two old ladies traveling around the world is not only famous for its exciting adventure, but also impresses with their profound experiences about life after the trip.
“We often get asked how to communicate effectively in places where English is not spoken. In my opinion, laughter is the most magical language. When we are different in nationality and race, laughter will bring you closer together,” Ms. Hamby shared.
After many difficulties, they completed their memorable trip. Now, both of them are planning to start their next adventure.
