The ecosystem and vegetation in DeadVlei were once fed by water from the Tsauchab River, allowing the area to become home to hundreds of Acacia erioloba trees.

DeadVlei is so dry that the trees cannot even decompose. They char in the sun, becoming monuments to their own destruction.

The tree remains here are believed to have died about 600-700 years ago (1340-1430).
