Holding a wedding at the White House, traveling around the world on Air Force One, having Secret Service protection... are the privileges of the children of the US president.
Not only do children of US presidents live in the White House, they also have the right to hold important events there such as graduation balls or weddings. Maria Hester Monroe, John Adams II, Elizabeth Tyler, Nellie Grant, Alice Lee Roosevelt, Jessie Woodrow Wilson, Eleanor Randolph Wilson, Lynda Bird Johnson and Tricia Nixon are the nine children of US presidents who have held their weddings at the White House. Tiffany Trump did not get married at the White House but got engaged here.
In 1975, 17-year-old Susan Ford Bales, daughter of the 38th President of the United States Gerald Ford, held her high school prom at the White House, marking the first and only prom ever held at the White House.
Children of US presidents also enjoy the privilege of traveling on government aircraft. The First Lady and her children are allowed to use the US president's means of transportation, but these means of transportation are only called Air Force One or Marine One when the president is on board.
Air Force One has a usable area of 372 m2, including the president's private area with a gym, dining room and meeting room. There is also a staff office area, a medical room, and two kitchens capable of preparing 100 meals.
The wives and children of the US president also enjoy the privilege of 24/7 Secret Service protection. The Secret Service closely followed Barron, the youngest son of US President Donald Trump, while he was studying at New York University. Barron did not stay in the school dormitory but lived in Trump Tower.
The children of US presidents also have the opportunity to interact with famous people, including heads of state and movie stars.
"There are times when I wish my father had just been a congressman," said Susan Ford Bales. "But the truth is, I wouldn't trade my father's presidency for anything. I've had the opportunity to travel and meet so many people, from world leaders to movie stars. It's been overwhelming at times."
Several prominent golfers have attended private events with the Trump family. During his first term, when Trump visited the UK and attended a state dinner hosted by Queen Elizabeth, four of his five children were present.
Another perk is that the White House chefs are always on hand to serve supper or snacks. However, the first family has to pay for the food, so their children can't order as much as they want.
"They serve you whatever you want. Then you get a bill for a peach and you say, 'Oh my gosh, this peach costs $500,'" Michelle Obama joked about the privilege in a 2018 interview. "I told Barack not to settle for anything until he knows what it costs."
Children of presidents are allowed to change the interior of their rooms, but are not allowed to change the structure of the residence due to the historical value of the White House.
“Some rooms are of great historical value and belong to the American people, not to the families who live there,” said Kate Andersen Brower, author of a book about first ladies.
The first family has access to previews of upcoming films. According to the White House Museum, Hollywood filmmakers are happy to send their films to the White House home theater. Built in the 1940s, the theater seats 42 people.
The first movie to be shown in theaters during Trump's first term was the animated film Finding Dory. Trump invited children of White House staff to watch the movie.
