Trung Khanh District (Cao Bang) has long been known for its delicious chestnut specialty.
In addition to the vast chestnut gardens, there is also a 120-year-old chestnut tree in Chi Vien commune that has been recognized as a Vietnamese Heritage Tree by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment.
The ancient chestnut tree is located in Ban Khay village, Chi Vien commune, Trung Khanh district. Ban Khay is surrounded by rice fields, mountains, and a fresh, cool climate.
The ancient chestnut tree belongs to Mr. Nong Van Phuc's family, planted and preserved for over 100 years.
The chestnut tree is about 15m high, with a canopy of 14m spreading evenly in all directions. The trunk circumference is about 3.13m, so two adults cannot hug it.
Chestnut trees grow well and produce 3,500 - 4,000 seeds every year.
This ancient chestnut tree flowers and fruits ripen 10-15 days earlier than other trees (chestnut trees flower in the third lunar month and are harvested around the eighth lunar month). The fruits of the Heritage chestnut tree are relatively large and uniform, dark brown in color, with good quality seeds and a delicious, distinctive flavor. This is a valuable genetic resource for people to develop and propagate, bringing economic benefits to the locality.
At over 120 years old, the ancient chestnut tree was recognized as a Vietnam Heritage Tree in 2016. This is also the first specialty fruit tree of Cao Bang province to be honored as a Vietnam Heritage Tree.
Not only bringing economic benefits, the ancient chestnut tree is also located in a location with beautiful natural scenery, surrounded by rice fields and majestic mountains.
Therefore, this place also attracts many tourists to visit and take photos every time they have the opportunity to visit Cao Bang.
Ms. Vu Thanh Hoa (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) is passionate about traveling and exploring. During this trip to Cao Bang, she and her group of friends found out information from social networks and learned that Trung Khanh's chestnuts are very famous, so the group decided to see the chestnut garden and especially this ancient chestnut tree with their own eyes.
Since the ancient chestnut tree was honored, this place has become one of the tourist attractions after leaving Ban Gioc waterfall and Nguom Ngao cave. Many tourist groups as well as many young people have come to admire and take pictures with the ancient chestnut tree, as well as buy chestnuts to bring home every time the chestnut season comes.
The recognition and honoring of the ancient chestnut tree in Chi Vien commune has contributed to preserving typical genetic resources, raising awareness and responsibility for environmental protection of the community in protecting and developing fruit trees, which are local specialties.According to VOV
