Cherry, an imported fruit with beautiful colors, is chosen by many families as a gift or for consumption during Tet. This year, the price of this imported fruit has increased, especially high-end products from Australia and New Zealand, but it is still popular with customers near Tet.

At a fruit shop on Le Van Sy Street (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City), New Zealand cherries of 32 - 34 mm size cost nearly 2 million VND per kilogram. Smaller sized fruits range from 900,000 to 1 million VND per kilogram.

Imported goods from Australia are also at a similar price, but have been out of stock since the 26th of Tet. In addition, Chilean cherries are cheaper, 200,000 - 250,000 VND per kg, and many people order in large quantities.

Similarly, the owner of a shop on Quang Trung Street (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City) said that the shop sold out all the high-end cherries a few days ago. According to the shop owner, the price of cherries increased by 20-35% compared to last year, depending on the type and size of the fruit.

"Cherry is chosen as a Tet gift so consumption is very good, especially high-end products. Many customers have placed orders half a month before Tet to have the goods before Tet," she said.

On online sales sites, many shops also announced that they were out of stock. Some customers had to wait 2-3 more days to receive their goods because import shipments were later than usual.

Ms. Hanh, a fruit trader from Australia, said that the 27th of Tet is the last day she receives orders for "air-delivered" cherries, but "orders are still booming". However, there are not many beautiful fruits left in Australia, so to find fresh, quality products at this time, traders like her have to go to markets further from the center. Currently, large-sized fruits are no longer available at the Australian market, because most of them are old, less fresh fruits at this time.

"The most important thing about cherries is that they must be fresh and delicious. I try to find the newest products for customers, so the price is a little higher," she said, adding that a 2 kg box of 30 - 32 mm size is currently about 15 - 1.6 million VND.

Hundreds of tons of Chilean cherries were also imported by supermarkets to serve the shopping needs of the Lunar New Year, with consumption reaching 80%. Supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City are still importing more goods to meet shopping needs in the days leading up to Tet.

Currently, the market has many types of imported cherries from Canada, Chile, Australia and New Zealand with different sizes. In addition to the regular types, this year there is also a limited number of organic varieties, which are also sought after by many people.

Cherries are expensive this year due to reduced supply and high demand. Imports from Australia sold out the earliest because production in that country decreased as many growers reduced their planting areas.

Imported cherries from the United States, which typically compete with Australian and New Zealand cherries, have been out of season since late last year, causing prices from other countries to rise. Despite their high prices, cherries remain a popular choice for enjoyment or as gifts.
