Secret apartment on top of Eiffel Tower

Towering over the Champs de Mars park in Paris for the past 130 years, the Eiffel Tower has become a cultural icon of the City of Light. Visitors from all over the world flock here to admire this unique structure, patiently lining up to climb to the top of the tower, to enjoy the panoramic view of the city from a height of more than 300 meters.

There are many reasons why this place is so attractive, from the impressive architecture, the wonderful scenery to the splendid night lights. There is even a Michelin-starred restaurant on the second floor of the tower for visitors to enjoy the best French cuisine.

However, few people know that Gustave Eiffel - the man behind the design and construction of the tower that bears his name - had a secret apartment at the top of the tower. In the completed design drawings of the Eiffel Tower, Mr. Gustave added a nearly 92 m2 apartment exclusively for himself.

Located just below the tower's spire in the same block as the observation deck, much of the apartment's space is occupied by technical details, elevator shafts and stairwells leading from the lower floors into the apartment.

In contrast to the tower's modern design, Gustave's apartment is decorated in a simple, classic style with velvet chairs, wooden tables and cabinets, and colorful patterned wallpaper.

The apartment still had enough space for a kitchen, bathroom and a living room, which had a table, a sofa and even a piano. There was no bedroom, as the famous engineer did not actually live there. He used this private room to conduct scientific research and experiments and to entertain famous guests, including the legendary American inventor Thomas Edison.

The tallest apartment in Paris when it was completed in 1889, it made Gustave the envy of Paris. According to writer Henri Gerard, some even offered the architect a handsome sum to live there. He refused them all.

Since 2015, this special apartment has been off-limits. Although visitors are still not allowed in, they can admire the apartment through a glass panel. Inside, wax figures of Gustave, his daughter Claire, and famous guest Thomas Edison are arranged to recreate the visit.
