Besides peach and apricot blossoms, the most popular flower during Tet is probably gladiolus (also known as gladiolus). To arrange the flower branches to bloom to the top, you can refer to the following tips.
Ms. Quynh Lien (Hai Phong) once made the flower-loving community fascinated by her vase of gladiolus blooming brightly and full of vitality.
Ms. Lien said that when she first received 70 Hue purple flower branches, she felt discouraged because the branches were tiny, the flower buds were pale purple, and the leaves were not smooth green but soft and limp. However, after 2 days of proper care and maintenance, she had a beautiful vase of flowers.
“The Hue purple flowers are like ducks suddenly turning into swans. A few days after being arranged, the flower branches are still full of vitality, blooming all the way to the tip."
How to choose gladiolus
To have a beautiful vase of gladiolus to welcome the Year of the Dragon, the most important thing is choosing the flowers.
According to Ms. Lien, you should choose flower branches with large, sturdy stems, fresh green leaves, and a bright shine. The flower branches are healthy, have many buds and are starting to open (the flower buds are just beginning to bloom), the flower color is clearly visible, and is fresh from the flower to the tip.
Be careful not to buy flowers from cold storage. Frozen gladiolus flowers often show signs of wilting and wrinkling at the base. The characteristics of gladiolus bunches just taken from cold storage are that the leaves are wet and have a bit of dew; if left outside for a long time, the leaves will dry out and turn yellow from the edges. If the flower branch has a bud that changes color, unlike the other buds, it is a cold-pressed flower and will not bloom when purchased.
How to care for and arrange flowers to bloom to the top
When you buy flowers, you should cut the base and trim the old leaves. If you don't want the flower stems to bend, you can roll up newspaper, tie the top, middle and base of the bunch with string and then put the whole bunch in a bucket of water. If you want the top of the flower stems to bend, you can lean the bunch against the wall, overnight the flower tips will bend in one direction. After 4-6 hours, the flowers will be firm and easy to shape as desired.
Note, gladiolus has quite long branches so you need to choose a tall vase or a heavy base to arrange the flowers beautifully and keep the vase balanced. You can put them directly in the vase, put them on the branches or use foam, all of which are beautiful.
When arranging flowers, cut the stem diagonally to increase the surface area for water absorption. Continue to remove the outer leaves and submerged leaves to help the flowers stay fresh longer and not rot.
Wash the vase before putting flowers in, use clean water to put flowers in and change the water every 2 days. Each time you change the water, cut off about 3-5cm of the stem, trim off wilted or crushed flowers.
If you want the flowers to bloom faster, you can mix warm water at about 40 degrees to arrange the flowers. If you drop a few ice cubes into the water, it will slow down the blooming of the flowers. Add flower nutrient solution to the water if arranging in a vase.
A secret when arranging gladiolus is that you should break off the top part, about 2-3 young buds at the top so that nutrients are concentrated on the remaining flowers, the flowers will bloom more beautifully and be full of vitality.
A beautiful flower branch is one where the flowers bloom evenly from bottom to top, and the colors of the flowers are even.
