Blockbuster "The Flash" fails at the box office

"The Flash" - the blockbuster about the fastest superhero in the universe - is predicted to suffer heavy losses as revenue drops to a record low.

On June 26, according to the Hollywood Reporter, The Flash's second-week box office revenue dropped 73% - the biggest drop among DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films. The film earned $15.3 million at the North American box office last weekend, falling to third place, behind the animated Spider-Man and Elemental. Globally, The Flash earned more than $210 million after two weeks in theaters.

Box office experts predict that with a production and marketing budget of $200 million, the Warner Bros. project could suffer heavy losses. Depending on the profit sharing ratio with the theater (usually 50/50), the work needs to earn double the budget to break even. "The reasons for The Flash's failure may need to be discussed, but this is the reality that the producers must face at this time," commented Screenrant.

Domestically, the superhero film also suffered from sluggish sales with a revenue of more than 3.5 billion VND last weekend, according to Box Office Vietnam - an independent box office monitoring unit. The Flash dropped to fifth place (topping the list was the animation Elemental with 8.4 billion VND).

The film, released in Vietnamese theaters from June 16, revolves around the life story of Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) - also known as The Flash, the fastest superhero in the DC Comics universe (faster than the speed of light). Although he has become a hero to save the world, Barry still lives in a family tragedy: his mother passed away for unknown reasons, his father was imprisoned on suspicion of murdering his wife.

One day, Barry discovers that he can travel back in time to the moment his mother was murdered to prevent the incident. Barry successfully saves his mother, but this event leads to a series of changes in the butterfly effect, leaving him trapped in the past with a different version of himself. In this timeline, Earth faces the threat of destruction from General Zod (Superman's enemy in Man of Steel).

Ezra Miller's performance is the main attraction of the film. In the present world, Barry lives a quiet life after many events. When lost in the new timeline, his 18-year-old version (also played by Miller) is innocent and carefree. The appearance of many guest stars - such as Michael Keaton, who has starred in many Batman films - creates highlights.

Film critics say the film’s main weakness lies in its CGI. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a 65% score from nearly 300 reviews from experts and an 84% score from audiences.
