Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs proposes 7-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2024

After receiving the official dispatch from the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs regarding two options for the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday, the Ministry of Home Affairs has studied the draft document to send to the Prime Minister. According to the draft, the Ministry of Home Affairs agrees with option 1 as proposed by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs.

According to this plan, cadres, civil servants, and public employees will have Tet holiday for the year of the Dragon 2024 from February 8, 2024 (December 29) to February 14, 2024 (January 5), with a total of 7 days off.

The plan for workers to have 2 days off before Tet and 5 days off during Tet is considered to be a harmonious combination of the number of days off before and after Tet, agreed upon by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Previously, in the draft of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs seeking opinions from ministries and branches to submit to the Prime Minister to propose a plan for the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday, the Ministry proposed two options for the holiday, both lasting 7 days, only differing in the starting time of the holiday.

Option 1 is that civil servants and public employees will have 7 days off from Thursday, February 8, 2024 to Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (ie December 29, Quy Mao year to January 5, Giap Thin year). With this option, on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2024, civil servants and public employees will have 2 days off before Tet and 5 days off during Tet (including 5 days off for Lunar New Year and 2 days off in lieu of weekly days off as prescribed in Clause 3, Article 111 of the Labor Code).

Option 2, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs also proposed a 7-day holiday but 1 day before Tet and 6 days during Tet. Accordingly, civil servants and public employees will have a holiday from Friday, February 9, 2024 to Thursday, February 15, 2024 (ie December 30, Quy Mao year to January 6, Giap Thin year).

With option 2, on the occasion of Lunar New Year, civil servants and public employees will also have 7 days off (including 5 days off for Lunar New Year and 2 days off in lieu of weekly days off, according to regulations in Clause 3, Article 111 of the Labor Code).

According to the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, both proposed options have the same number of days off, but the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs proposes choosing option 1 for the holiday schedule of officials, civil servants and public employees because it ensures harmony in the time off before and after Tet.

For employees in enterprises, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs said that based on actual conditions and the holiday schedule applicable to civil servants and public employees, employers will arrange the Lunar New Year holiday schedule. The State encourages enterprises to apply the same holiday schedule for employees as for civil servants.

Employers at enterprises take the initiative in scheduling holidays, but enterprises need to notify employees of the Lunar New Year holiday plan at least 30 days before implementation.
