Tech billionaire Narayana Murthy, dubbed the "Bill Gates of India" and father-in-law of the British Prime Minister, will visit Vietnam next week.
Mr. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys Technologies, will visit Vietnam from May 19 to 23. In addition to working with government agencies, he will have many activities to meet the domestic technology community and students. On the afternoon of May 20 at Hoa Lac High-Tech Park, the billionaire will have a dialogue with the Vietnamese information technology community. The event will be hosted by Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT.
According to experts, the visit of the Indian tech legend is an opportunity for the domestic tech community to be inspired, share strategies and exchange experiences on innovation, team building and corporate culture.
Narayana Murty owns assets worth more than 4 billion USD and is currently referred to by the media as the "father-in-law of the British Prime Minister" when his son-in-law Rishi Sunak becomes the first black prime minister of the UK in 2022.
However, his reputation was known to the world decades earlier. Mr. Murty was born into a family of teachers in Karnataka, India. In 1967, he studied electronics at the University of Mysore and continued his studies in information technology at the Kanpur Institute of Technology. In 1981, with a modest capital of 250 USD from his wife, he and 6 other scientists founded Infosys.
Narayana Murthy became an IT legend and was dubbed the Bill Gates of India when he transformed Infosys from an unknown company into an icon of the country's software industry. In 1999, Infosys was the first Indian company to be listed on the US Nasdaq stock exchange. In 2023, the company achieved a revenue of over $18 billion, had 320,000 employees, was present in 50 countries worldwide and had a market value of over $70 billion.
One of Narayana Murthy’s most influential achievements was pioneering the global IT service delivery model, which allowed companies to perform work in locations with good human resources, economic sense and low risk. This model revolutionized the global IT service industry by optimizing structure, resources, work distribution and improving the speed and quality of service.
In contrast to the glamour of his career, Murthy and his family live in an apartment in Bengaluru. He drives a small car and says he still helps his wife wash dishes. The billionaire does not own a private jet and everything about Mr. Murthy and his wife is considered modest and unpretentious.
In his first visit to Vietnam, Mr. Narayana Murthy is expected to share his practical experience in business and building a corporate culture that has helped him and his colleagues turn Infosys into a symbol of the Indian technology industry. He will also discuss with the technology community promoting innovation in businesses, the development of new technology trends as well as opportunities for the Vietnamese IT industry.
