A 10-year-old boy suddenly suffered from left-sided paralysis. Doctors diagnosed him with a stroke caused by a ruptured cerebral blood vessel, a rare disease in children.

On September 18, the Phu Tho Department of Health announced that the diagnosis showed that the child had a ruptured cerebral blood vessel due to a congenital cerebral vascular malformation. The child received intensive emergency care and overcame the acute phase. However, after surgery, the child suffered from left hemiplegia, weakness on the right side, and could not walk on his own. All personal activities required assistance from relatives.

The patient was taken to the Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation Hospital by his family for treatment. Doctors combined physical therapy and rehabilitation with paraffin candle wrapping, electroacupuncture, electropulse, cupping, hydroacupuncture, acupressure massage, and acupuncture. After an active treatment course, the patient was able to walk on his own, his left side was still weak, his right hand could firmly grasp objects, and he could hold a pen to write.

Pediatric patients are treated with acupuncture by a doctor at the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly interrupted due to a blockage (ischemic stroke) or rupture (hemorrhagic stroke). When part of the brain does not receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood, brain cells gradually die, causing loss of brain function.

There are many causes of stroke in children, mainly congenital vascular malformations or rare diseases such as congenital heart disease, blood clotting disorders, and arterial disorders. Experts say stroke is very rare in children. If it occurs, the consequences are often very severe, leaving both physical and mental sequelae for the patient.

Stroke in adults often has typical, easily recognizable initial signs such as crooked mouth, slurred speech, and weak limbs. In children, the initial signs are quite vague and can be easily confused with common illnesses such as convulsions, brief loss of consciousness, and clumsy movements.

Other signs include the child suddenly complaining of a severe headache or crying continuously accompanied by vomiting, convulsions and loss of consciousness, the mouth is crooked to one side when eating or drinking. The child cannot grasp things normally, drags one leg or has strange noises in the head, and is prone to turning purple when exerting themselves.

Doctors recommend that when parents detect unusual signs in their children, they should immediately take them to the hospital for emergency treatment and timely treatment during the golden time.
