On the morning of June 14, Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) organized a practice session in an unofficial match at Hang Day Stadium.
This is the first VAR training session for referees. The session is supervised by FIFA expert Bhaveshan Moorghen, with support from the Hanoi U19 Team.
VAR vehicle equipment is 100% imported with quality supervision from FIFA.
After 6 days of practical training on the VAR car in steps 3a and 3b, a number of referees and assistant referees moved on to the decisive training phase with step 3c - practice in an unofficial match.
Over the past few days, 18 referees and assistant referees participating in the VAR training course have been practicing officiating matches with VAR in short-term simulated situations to familiarize themselves with the regulations, protocols, and the use of technological equipment to analyze situations. The learning process takes place continuously and at high intensity from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day to complete the required progress in each training step as required by the International Football Federation (FIFA).
Some referees who have completed enough exercises in training steps 3a and 3b with low and medium difficulty (5-5 matches in about 10 minutes and 11-11 matches in about 30 minutes) will enter stage 3c with the highest difficulty (full matches in 90 minutes). There are 3 referees assigned to practice in this first session including main referee Mai Xuan Hung, VAR referee Duong Huu Phuc, and assistant VAR Le Vu Linh. In addition, 3 referees and assistant referees of the Hanoi Referee Board will participate in supporting the match management.
According to the roadmap, the trainees will continue to complete training steps 3a-3b and move on to step 3c expected from June 16, ensuring that each referee must participate in training at an unofficial match. The entire practice process is recorded (both on the field and in the VAR car) and sent to the World Football Federation every day. From there, the experts of this organization will evaluate the overall practice process of each person. VAR technology will only be officially applied in Vietnam after passing the strict testing and evaluation steps of the World Football Federation.
VAR (Video Assistant Referee) is a technology that supports referees using video. Currently, this technology is used to support and help referees grasp the situation of the match, making the most accurate decisions in controversial cases. The VAR system was first tested in England, a few matches in Germany and Italy. In 2018, this technology was officially applied for the first time in the World Cup.
