Earthquake in Iran kills 4 and injures 120

At least four people were killed and 120 injured when a 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck the northeastern Iranian city of Kashmar.

Local media reported that the earthquake occurred at 1:24 p.m. on June 18 (4:54 p.m. Vietnam time). According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Iran is located at the intersection of several tectonic plates and is seismically active. In early 2023, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake killed three people and injured over 800 in the mountainous northwest region near the border with Türkiye. In late 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit the town of Bam (southeast), killing over 31,000 people.
