Japan's Honda Motor Co. is recalling more than 750,000 cars in the US market because of a faulty sensor that could cause front airbags to deploy at the wrong time.

The recall affects certain Honda Pilot, Accord, Civic sedan, HR-V and Odyssey models from the 2020 through 2022 model years, as well as the 2020 Fit and Civic Coupe. It also affects the 2021 and 2022 Civic hatchback, the 2021 Civic Type R and Insight, the 2020 and 2021 CR-V, CR-V Hybrid, Passport, Ridgeline and Accord Hybrid. The Acura luxury brand's affected models include the 2020 and 2022 MDX, 2020 through 2022 RDX and 2020 and 2021 TLX.

Documents posted by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on February 6 said the front passenger seat weight sensor in the above vehicles may be faulty and short-circuit, affecting the airbag's function. Accordingly, the vehicle needs sensors to disable the airbag if there is a child or small person sitting in the seat. If the airbag cannot be disabled in these special cases, this will increase the risk of injury.

Honda said its dealers are required to replace the seat sensors free of charge to owners. Owners will be notified by March 18.

Honda said it received 3,834 warranty claims, but no reports of injuries or deaths due to the problem between June 30, 2020, and January 19, 2024.
