I have had a throbbing pain on one side of my head for nearly 10 days now. Taking painkillers only helps for a few hours. Is this prolonged headache a sign of brain disease, doctor? (Tran Lan, 50 years old, Dak Nong).
Dr. Le Viet Thang, Department of Neurosurgery, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, advises:
To accurately diagnose the cause of the headache, the patient needs to be examined by a doctor, asked about the patient's medical history, the nature of the pain, and have a comprehensive neurological examination. Depending on each case, the doctor will order other necessary tests such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, eye examination, fundus examination, blood tests, and cerebrospinal fluid tests.
If you have any of the following symptoms, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. Symptoms include:
2. Change in the nature or type of headache compared to before.
3. Unusually severe headache.
4. Headache increases when coughing or when exercising.
5. The headache is getting worse.
6. Headache with changes in personality, behavior, or mental function.
7. Headache accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, memory loss, decreased alertness or neurological symptoms such as difficulty speaking, weak limbs, seizures, visual disturbances...
8. Headache with red, sore eyes.
9. Headache with pain and increased sensitivity of pain in the temples.
10. Headache after a blow to the head.
