Local officials said the attack took place in the town of Sevare. The explosion destroyed about 20 houses.
Earlier the same day, the Malian government announced that its military had foiled a terrorist attack also in the town of Sevare. The military used drones to destroy three cars loaded with explosives.
Last week, Oumar Traore, the acting president of Mali’s chief of staff, and three others were killed in an ambush in Nara, a rural area in the Koulikoro region of southwestern Mali.
Located in West Africa, Mali has been battling an Islamist insurgency in the north of the country for the past decade. Militants linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS) have seized significant territory, killing thousands and displacing millions more. Mali has also faced two military coups since 2020, further complicating the situation.
