Google CEO Sundar Pichai believes that AI will make the problem of misinformation, fake news and images worse and could have unpredictable consequences.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai says the economic impact of artificial intelligence will be significant
On April 16, Google CEO Sundar Pichai warned that society is not ready for the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Recently, Google launched an experimental chatbot product called Bard, which uses AI technology, after its "rival" Microsoft announced the integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT application into the upgraded version of the Bing search engine.
Since its launch in 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has created a “fever” in the technology world and shows no signs of cooling down. However, public opinion is increasingly concerned about the consequences of AI technology on humans.
Last month, tech leaders Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, along with 25,000 others, signed an open letter calling for an immediate halt to OpenAI's efforts to develop a language system more powerful than GPT-4.
Google has published a draft of its recommendations for governing AI, but Mr Pichai said society must quickly find ways to adapt, with regulations, laws punishing abuse and treaties between countries to ensure AI is safe for the world.
Speaking on CBS's "60 Minutes" program (USA), Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that the development of AI management laws to ensure that this technology is applied safely and in accordance with human values cannot be decided by a technology company alone, but also requires the participation of social scientists, ethics experts and researchers in other related fields.
In addition, Mr. Pichai also warned that AI will impact "every product of every company."
He assessed that new technologies capable of working like humans are becoming "worrisome," when AI applications can perform a number of jobs, including writers, accountants, architects, doctors or even software engineers.
In addition, the CEO believes that the problem of misinformation, fake news and images will become more serious and can cause unpredictable consequences.
When asked whether society is ready for AI technology like Bard, Mr. Pichai said that on the one hand, he believes that society has not yet adapted, demonstrated by the fact that the speed of thinking and adaptation of social organizations has not kept up with the speed of technology development.
On the other hand, he is also optimistic because many people have started to worry about the consequences of AI very early on, which is different from when previous technologies emerged.
With a 60-minute program, Mr. Sundar Pichai and host Scott Pelley had interesting experiences with chatbot Bard, such as recognizing objects, creating stories...
However, when answering a question about inflation, the Bard app recommended five books about inflation, but these five books do not exist in reality.
Mr. Pichai explained that Bard also has “illusions” and there are “black boxes” inside this application that even the developers cannot fully understand.
This answer surprised Pelley and made him ask, "You don't fully understand how smart applications like this one work and yet you still 'release' them into society?" The Google CEO replied, "Even humans cannot fully understand human thinking."
