Scientists and managers visits the place where the 9-storey lotus-shaped tower structure was found
The Con Son - Kiep Bac Relic Management Board (Chi Linh, Hai Duong) in coordination with the Viet Nam Institute of Archaeology, on the morning of January 8, made a proclamation of initial results of an archeological spell at Con Son pagoda.
All vestiges of a Cuu pham Lien hoa (9-storey lotus-shaped tower) structure foundation from the time of the Tran and Le dynasties have been unearthed in the excavation pit covering a total area of 171 m2 behind the front shrine of the Patriarch's house. The architecture has rectangular space with a natural stone-arranged foundation next to an underlying structural layer. The architecture is distinctly divided into 3 compartments (3.3 m wide each) and 2 lean-tos. The foundation pier system is made of sand and gravel, the foundation pillars are arranged equally with one in the centre of the structure. The 32m2 excavation pit at the back of the Patriarch's house has revealed a bearing post system, which was likely the architecture of the Patriarch's rear hall as recorded in 17th-century epitaphs, while other findings dated back to the Tran dynasty. As for the 3 investigative pits, nothing was found in the one outside the pagoda's yard, while the 2 others inside showed traces of a foundation determined as restoration traces in 17th century. Besides, many objects including pieces of tile, brick, and ceramic in the time of the Tran and Le dynasties were also found during the archeological spell.
